Prince Amukamara knows what Odell Beckham Jr. is going through

A first-round pick who is injured in his first practice and draws the ire of the coach for not being on the field? Prince Amukamara can relate to what Odell Beckham Jr. is going through this summer because three training camps ago he was experiencing the same thing.

"It definitely is a lot of pressure, especially as a first-round pick as high as he went," Amukamara said this week. "Everyone wants to see 'the investment.' They want to see the first-round pick perform and when they heard [he is hurt] it is kind of tough. I'm sure Odell is feeling like, 'Man, I have to get out there,' but I know he is just being smart and will go out when he is ready."

Amukamara missed his entire rookie training camp in 2011 because of a foot injury he suffered in one of his first practices. That injury followed a brief holdout over his contract and it slowed Amukamara's development. Last year's first-round pick, Justin Pugh, sat out a week and a half of camp with a concussion. He wound up starting 16 regular-season games for the Giants.

Beckham missed most of the spring workouts with a hamstring that he reinjured on the first day of camp this year. He hasn't practiced since, although he has been fielding punts and catching passes off a machine.

"There are a lot of side comments," Amukamara said. "If he does any movement that looks athletic they will say, 'Oh, you can do that but you can't run?' A lot of people from the outside don't really know what the situation is, but I'm sure when he is ready he will be ready... As long as he is ready by Week 1 against Detroit, I will be excited about that."

Giant steps
WR Victor Cruz likes the shorter passes that the new offense is built around. "That's my specialty," he said this week. "I like going deep and making the big play, but I love getting the ball in my hands and turning a short gain into a big gain. That's my M.O. and I like it so far for sure." . . . S Antrel Rolle, who gets a flamboyant haircut at the start of each training camp, grew tired of this year's coiffure rather quickly. He posted a picture of himself on Instagram on Wednesday that revealed a cleanly shaved scalp . . . The Giants did not practice on Wednesday and will have practices on Thursday and on Friday that are open to the public before leaving for Canton and the Hall of Fame Game on Saturday.
