CBSSports.com's college football version of March Madness has concluded with No. 1 seed LSU defeating a Cindarella in No. 5 seed Navy for the inaugural Helmet Madness crown.
The Midshipmen led the title game early, holding as much as an 18 percent lead through the first few hours of voting. However, it appears as if Tigers fans flocked to the polls to stuff the ballot box and ensure LSU pulled out the championship win.
Hundreds of thousands of votes were cast over the last two weeks and ultimately you, the fans, decided LSU had the best helmet in college football last season.
The fourth ranked team overall and No. 1 seed out of the Bowden Regional, LSU took down (16) Illinois 64-36 in the Round of 64 before dominating SEC West rival (9) Mississippi State 75-25 to advance to the Sweet 16. It was a second straight SEC West win for the Bayou Bengals as they trounced (4) Auburn 70-30 before sneaking by (3) Notre Dame 51-49 to earn a spot in the Final Four. LSU went head-to-head with the top overall seed in Michigan, squeaking out a come-from-behind 51-49 victory by a mere 137 votes just to advance to the title game.
Navy, the No. 5 seed out of the Osborne Regional, had an easier road with wins over (13) Wisconsin, (4) Arizona State and (8) West Virginia but nevertheless earned its way to the championship showdown. The Midshipmen wiped the floor with (3) Florida State 61-39 and were equally dominant with a 62-38 victory over (2) Texas. That's nothing to sneeze at. Not one bit.
