Banged-up Odell Beckham provides quieter heroics for Giants

POSTED BY: ODELL BECKHAM JR in NEWS

LONDON — Odell Beckham Jr. was listed as "probable" for Sunday's game against the Rams at Twickenham Stadium, an injury designation the NFL has done away with, but one the Giants wanted to dust off if only to make it clear the star wide receiver would play.

But with about two hours to go before kickoff at Twickenham Stadium, Beckham looked anything but probable as he labored through abbreviated pregame warmups in obvious discomfort. He ended up playing in the Giants' 17-10 win, and he was productive. But it was clear Beckham was far from 100 percent, and hurting from start to finish as his hip pointer lingered.

"It took a lot to get ready for this game," Beckham admitted after the fact, adding he did not feel he was as fast as usual. "It was all mental preparation, actually. Even going through warmups, I didn't quite known what to expect. I got out there, and it was a little ... it was pretty painful. {Co-owner John] Mara and [general manager Jerry] Reese and coach (Ben McAdoo) gave me an opportunity to play."

That sure sounds like the Giants had serious thoughts of sitting Beckham, who injured his hip last week against the Ravens, then fought through the pain to post the best game of his career. But Beckham gutted through against the Rams, finishing with five catches for 49 yards.

"He's one of the toughest kids I know, and I know he's going to lay it all on the line for his team, for his receivers," wideout Victor Cruz said. "Whatever he needs, we're going to back him up 100 percent. We knew it would be tough for him, because that's not an easy thing to play through. He got it done. He went out and played his butt off, and us receivers backed him up every step of the way."

Beckham said he and the Giants came up with a "plan" to manage his workload given his limitations, and it was made clear he could come off the field if need be. Beckham did not play every offensive snap, but he still played 95 percent of them, his 54 snaps leading the receivers group.

Beckham also made a crucial catch, snagging a high pass on third-and-3 inside Los Angeles territory in the fourth quarter to extend the Giants' eventual game-winning drive.

"He fought through some things today, as did a lot of other guys. It was a gutsy performance by those players," McAdoo said. "He made a nice play there on third down for us in the green zone that kept the drive alive and helped us score a touchdown."

Was there a question of whether Beckham would play? "Yeah, there was a seed of doubt," he said. "But at the same time, you're going to do whatever you're going to need to do to be out there with your team. There's no better feeling than that. There's no better feeling than going home on the plane and we're all going to be laughing, smiling.

"I had the thoughs of what wouldn't happen if I played. I feel like I'd be letting people down. And it was enough motivation. My team fired me up, had my back all night, made sure that I did everything I could to help them out."
