news / Verizon Teams With NFL Star Odell Beckham Jr. In New Spot

This coming Sunday during the 2017 Video Music Awards, Verizon will debut its latest spot featuring frontman Thomas Middleditch of HBO's Silicon Valley fame. This time he'll be joined by NFL All-Pro wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. to bring Verizon’s message of network superiority to another moment where cell signals struggle.

Middleditch, who says he just wants to be funny or at the very least cute in these spots, came to the brand via the director, who he had worked with on an independent film. But what ultimately made him say yes to being the pitchman was the campaign fits with Silicon Valley.

"It fits with the brand," he said. "Plus, I'm a tech guy myself anyway."

The spot, created by McCann NY, introduces a reporter who can’t livestream the press conference because of poor service. What follows is Middleditch offering a helping hand and a series of mismatched sports metaphors that Odell politely yet unsuccessfully corrects.



Here's an exclusive sneak peak of the spot PLUS an additional Spanish spot featuring Middleditch and Latino actor Luis Mendez, also developed in partnership with McCann NY and The Community, which will also premiere during the VMAs..

And for the record, Middleditch told me the scene in this first spot where he kicks the ball to Beckham was all him. "That’s not CGI, that’s 100% sports athleticism," he deadpanned. "I’m assuming the New York Giants will call me to be their punter.
